Autumn 2 and our first week of learning...
Date: 8th Nov 2018 @ 3:02pm
Welcome back! We hope you’ve had a nice break.
Our topic this half term is ‘animals’. The children have been introduced to our new topic book ‘Monkey and Me’ by Emily Gravett. This book has lots of repeated refrains, which the children have been enjoying retelling. In maths we have been counting the amount of animals within the story. For the children’s maths guided group activity, the children have been pretending to be cheeky monkeys. They played a simple game, where they rolled the dice, counted the amount of dots that the dice showed, then completed that amount of monkey jumps.
During Literacy, the children have been very interested in fireworks. They have drawn their own firework picture during their guided writing activity. Some of the children have been focusing upon copying patterns, whilst other children have been practicing writing their names onto their drawings.
The children began guided reading this week, which is a small group activity where they practise their early reading skill. This week the children have been reading ‘Under Our Feet’ by Charlotte Raby. Although this is a picture book, the children have been focusing upon recognising and opening the front cover, turning pages in the book and understanding that the left page comes before the right. The children were very interested to learn that there were pipes underneath their houses.
The children also had a Diwali celebration day, were they got the opportunity to learn about the Festival of Light. They enjoyed making lanterns, creating mehndi patterns on hand templates and completing Diwali cutting activities.
