At Canon Burrows we pride ourselves on having a rich and challenging curriculum that will engage our learners, ensure they make good progress, foster lifelong learning skills and promote British values.
Phonics is taught in EYFS and Key stages 1, following the Letters and Sounds Phonics programme. This supports the teaching of reading and early spelling. The children take part in a variety of games and activities in order to practise reading and writing new and key words.
Guided reading happens daily and involves a mixture of group reading with a teacher or teaching assistant. Independent reading and activities are related to the guided reading books and phonics. Children are also heard reading independently by other adults in school. Reading schemes used at Canon Burrows include: Phonics Bug, Big Cat Phonics and the Oxford Reading Tree.
