Summer 1 Week 2
Date: 23rd Apr 2026 @ 2:44pm
English
This week we have been exploring the story of ‘Jack and the Beanstalk.’ The children have been joining in with the repetitive refrains of the story, learning the poem ‘Beanstalk Growing Tall’ and creating their own beautiful paintings of a beanstalk with cotton wool for the fluffy clouds at the top.
Rhyme Time, Squiggle, Poetry Basket and Phonics
This week the children have really enjoyed learning our new poem ‘Sliced Bread’ which is all about making jam sandwiches. The children showed fantastic fine motor skills spreading the butter and jam on their bread and then cutting their sandwich in half.
Slice, slice, the bread looks nice.
Spread, spread butter on the bread.
On the top put jam so sweet.
Now it’s good enough to eat.
In Phonics we have been learning the sound ‘b’. We have been playing games of I Spy to help us hear the initial sounds and making silly soup finding objects beginning with the initial sound. Our Nursery rhyme this week is ‘Incy Wincy Spider’ and we have been re-visiting our circle marks by making two circles in Squiggle while you wiggle.
Maths
In Maths we have been looking at the story of Meg and Mog and we have been counting out 3 objects to make a magic potion. We have also been singing lots of counting songs and the children have been showing numbers on their fingers to join in with them.
R.E
In R.E this week, we heard the story of Jesus calming the storm. We heard how this story shows how Jesus was a good friend because His disciples (special friends) could trust Him to look after them.
We had fun re-enacting the story in the water tray.
PSHE
In PSHE we have been discussing the meaning of ‘triggers’, and thinking whether the children can talk about what triggers them to go into the red zone. Show the children a caution sign, and discuss how when they are in the yellow zone they have to be careful they don’t end up in the red zone.
Music
In Music we have been exploring the different sounds we can make using our voice.
- Princess/giant/robot
- Happy/sad/angry/excited
- Loud/quiet/whispering
- High/low
- Fast/slow
- Singing voice – different so-mi pitches
Provision
Our Reading for pleasure text this week is the Smeds and the Smoos so we have been exploring Space around the classroom by building rockets, painting rockets using shapes and re-enacting the story through our Space tray. We have also been enjoying the lovely sunshine by exploring our EYFS garden looking for bugs and bird watching.
