Autumn 1 Week 6
Literacy
This week, we have introduced the topic book ‘The Little Red Hen.’ The children learnt lots of new vocabulary, such as farmyard, corn, mill and flour. We have learned that flour is made from wheat, which is harvested by farmers. We have had lots of fun making and eating our own bread. It was very yummy!
We thought about who we should say thank you to for all the wonderful food we have: God, farmers, delivery drivers, factory workers and shop workers.
Maths
In Maths, we have been making rockets by practising our building skills, inspired by the story ‘Whatever Next!’ We have been thinking about which shapes we wanted to choose to make a rocket and why certain shapes of bricks were easier to use than others.
PE
In PE this week, we have been focusing on our throwing and catching skills by throwing bibs into the air and catching them with two hands, one hand, our feet, our heads and our arms.
PSHE
This week, we have been exploring different emotions and using mirrors to show these on our faces. We also took part in some bubble breathing, watching bubbles pop whilst taking deep breaths to help calm us down.
Music
In Music this week, we have been practising playing instruments loudly and quietly.
R.E.
In R.E. this week, we reminded ourselves of the Creation story and how God made the world and everything in it for us to enjoy and share. We learned that at Harvest time, people all around the world say thank you to God for all that He has given them, especially food. We learned a new 'Thank You' prayer that we will say at snack time.
Rhyme Time, Phonics and Poetry Basket
Our Rhyme Time song this week is Hey Diddle Diddle. We have been learning what a fiddle is and we have enjoyed creating our own musical instruments using cardboard boxes and elastic bands. As part of our phonics learning this week, we have been focusing on rhyming words. Our poem for this week is Five Little Pumpkins.
5 Little pumpkins sitting on a gate,
The first one said it’s getting late.
The second one said there are witches in the air,
The third one said well I don’t care.
The fourth one said let’s run, run, run,
The fifth one said let’s have some fun.
But ooooooooh went the wind and out went the light,
And five little pumpkins tumbled out of sight.
Squiggle While You Wiggle
In Squiggle While You Wiggle, we have been practising the 'wiggle side to side' pattern. The children particularly enjoyed dancing along to this pattern and found it much easier than 'wiggle up and down'.
Independent Learning
Our reading-for-pleasure story this week is ‘Leaf Man’ by Lois Ehlert, so we have enjoyed trying to create our own 'Leaf Man' using leaves we have collected whilst playing outside. We have gone on leaf colour hunts to look at all the beautiful colours of autumn.
During independent learning, we have made playdough pumpkins, built rockets using bricks and junk modelling materials and practised our fine motor skills in the pumpkin rice tray and by hammering golf tees into pumpkins.
