ECO REFILL EXCHANGE
At Canon Burrows, we believe children are never too young to make a difference. Through the ECO Refill Exchange, our pupils are becoming Agents of Change — developing the confidence, creativity and responsibility to help build a greener future for everyone.
How it all began...
Our ECO Refill Exchange began with an inspiring visit to the Mayor’s Green Summit, where members of our ECO Committee discovered a pupil-led business supported by Pupils Profit. Inspired by the idea that children could make a real difference through enterprise, our ECO team returned to school full of exciting possibilities!
Our ECO Lead took the next step by applying for a £2,000 Green Grant from Manchester Council. We were delighted to be successful and receive the funding needed to launch our very own refill business.
As a proud Plastic Free School, reducing single-use plastic is incredibly important to us. The ECO Refill Exchange gives our pupils the opportunity to turn their environmental passion into action, showing how a simple idea can grow into a business that benefits both our school and the planet.
Building the business...
The ECO Refill Exchange is a pupil-run refill station, giving our children the opportunity to develop real-life business skills while making sustainable choices easier for our school community.
Our young entrepreneurs help to promote and sell everyday household products, including:
Washing-up liquid
Hand soap
Laundry liquid
Surface cleaner
Customers bring their own clean, reusable containers to refill, helping to reduce plastic waste and encouraging families to rethink how they shop.
Running the business allows pupils to develop valuable skills in teamwork, communication, customer service, marketing and money management. They learn how to make decisions, solve problems and work together towards a shared goal.
We are committed to keeping our enterprise sustainable. All profits are reinvested into the business to maintain stock, explore new products and support future environmental projects within school. This means every refill helps us continue our mission to make a positive difference.
Our HOPES for the future...
Our vision for the ECO Refill Exchange reaches far beyond the school gates! As the business grows, we hope to take our refill stall into the wider community, helping more people discover simple ways to reduce plastic waste and live more sustainably.
Our future ambitions include attending:
Church summer fairs
Community environmental events
Local farmers’ markets
These opportunities will allow our pupils to share their knowledge, promote sustainable shopping and inspire other families and organisations to make environmentally friendly choices.
We also hope to expand our product range and continue developing the business through the ideas and enthusiasm of our young entrepreneurs.
